In a NewsCenter 23 update the Environmental Protection Agency finished scouring the eight mile canal that irrigates the fields of Donna's farming community.
In the past two weeks more than 15,000 fish were removed and in an effort to make the waterway unfishable the state and EPA are warning people that even cooking the fish are not safe to eat. They contain a chemical not a bacteria that can cause liver damage in adults and learning and developmental disabilities in children.
In the next few months the EPA hopes to find the mysterious source of contamination that has eluded state investigators for more than 10 years and then eventually remove the contaminated sediment.
