CAMERON COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — As of late, several residents in Cameron County have become victims of robbery.
Yesterday, 30-year-old Gustavo Tijerina and 40-year-old Ismael Hernandez were arraigned on charges of robbing and killing Border Patrol agent Javier Vega, Jr. in Willacy County. After that, officials became suspicious as to whether the accused were involved in other armed robberies like this around Cameron County.
"The DPS and the Border Patrol, you know, worked very hard to locate these people and of course, some of those incidents have occurred in Cameron County because they were operating the same way," said Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio.
"They've come upon families fishing, and get out, they fire a few rounds off, and you know 'give me your car key, give me your jewelry, give me your cell phone, everything', and then they leave them stranded and take all their valuables and that's happened a few times," said Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence.
According to Sheriff reports, Tijerina admitted to the wrongdoings:
"He is the one who is the one who has admitted to being involved in this one right here," said Lucio. "I think there's probably five incidences here. He's admitted to three."
An aggravated robbery charge has been issued for Tijerina, he will most likely be brought to Cameron County to see a judge here:
Cameron County investigators are doing their part to find out if any other individuals are associated with the slew of robberies happening around the area.
"Now we're still continuing working and finding more information and hopefully there was another individual that was arrested in Willacy County in relation to the incident that occurred in Willacy County."
