National Census Day is here and to create more awareness to the public several Valley counties joined together to attend the 2010 Regional Census Rally in McAllen, Michelle Macias has the story.
Participation numbers across the Valley are low, but officials hope that changes this time around in the census count. Hidalgo county's participation rate is a low 31% and something that County Judge Rene Ramirez wants to see turned around. If people don't mail in the census forms, federal money that is distributed by the government, will not be distributed to the areas that need it. Rio Grande Valley officials say funds are imperative to continue the growth of the region.
Some people we interviewed wasted no time in filling out the forms and mailing them out, because they know what's at stake. Officials with the U.S. Census say so far about 50% of the nation's household have returned their 2010 census forms.
