WESLACO, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A drive-by shooting has two people dead and three more in the hospital.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office says it happened late Wednesday night at the intersection of Mile 9 North and Mile 6.5 West near Weslaco.
A red mustang and a maroon Cadillac drove up to a home and opened fire. Bullets sprayed into a group of people outside the home.
"You have evidence that's recovered from the street, from outside the residence," JP Rodriguez of the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office said. "And these types of cases, we want to make sure that we don't overlook anything."
Details haven't been released as to how many shooters there were and whether the victims had any gang ties. The neighborhood is, however, a place that gets a lot of police attention.
Sheriff's Office officials say they get calls to come to this area frequently.
"They pass by all the time- All the time they pass by; the state troopers," a neighbor said in Spanish, the person not wanting to have his name included. "All the time. All the way to here. From (a nearby street) up to here and then he turns around and around and around."
This is a large crime scene covering a major intersection for this neighborhood. Three streets don't have direct access to each other without this intersection. The Sheriff's Office has kept it closed since late Wednesday night.
They say daylight is needed to process the numerous bullet casings from the shooting.
"A lot of people were out here," Rodriguez said. "Some of them we have to sort through the witnesses and people just out here trying to see what's going on."
Neighbors say they heard around 20 to 30 gunshots during the drive-by. Another neighbor said the gunfire lasted about a minute and a half.
