BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Crews are currently in the ten-month process of building a four-story parking facility called "La Plaza Brownsville Parking Garage". The 10,000-square foot structure will be able to hold up to 190 cars and include office and retail space.
The garage is located between International Blvd. and 14th Street downtown.
The construction of this $5.6 million parking garage is the third and final stage in the city of Brownsville's ten year long multi modal project.
"It's to complement the parking situation for downtown, the college, the university, and all of our patrons that visit us here at the multi modal terminal," said B Metro assistant director Andrew Munoz.
Officials are still deciding an appropriate price for parking.
"It's gonna have a structured fee that we're in the process of finalizing now that we know the final number for the project," said Munoz. "We're looking at about a dollar an hour, very comparable to what you pay at the meter."
All that revenue will be spent for the garage and pay for public transportation.
Munoz says one of the goals is to help make the streets of downtown Brownsville easier to navigate.
"That's a lot of what we're dealing with in terms of traffic, orientation of traffic, the traffic department, the engineering department, especially with the expansion of the university. It's gonna help us," said Munoz.
The parking garage is expected to be completed by February next year.
