HARLINGEN, TX — United Blood Services and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings will be honoring 7-year-old cancer survivor Aiden Perez. A blood drive will be held at Harlingen Field from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. All donors who donate in honor of Aiden will receive two free tickets to Friday’s game.
“Donating blood is not something I ever considered until Aiden got sick,” said Tracy Davila, Aiden’s mother. “You don’t know until you’re on the receiving end, that it’s something precious to you that can keep your child going.”
Davila said Aiden was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March 2009. He underwent chemotherapy treatments that required various blood components.
“He was in the intensive care unit for 10 days and during those 10 days he had a ton of platelets and blood,” Davila said.
This May, after years of treatment, Aiden was finally considered cancer free. To honor her son’s recovery, Davila chose to organize a blood drive with United Blood Services hoping to promote the importance of a blood donation.
United Blood Services is the only blood bank in the Valley and services all 18 hospitals. Donors can make an appointment to give blood at www.UnitedBloodServices.org . With each donation, donors earn points in United Blood Services’ Hero in Me reward program.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
