MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Investigators suspect arson is the cause of a late-night fire in South McAllen.
It happened at a used clothing company south of Military Highway. The call came in before midnight on Wednesday. It wasn't under control until nearly 3 a.m. Crews were still putting out some burns Thursday. They say they will continue working likely until Friday.
"The clothing, the way it's packed, makes it very difficult for us to extinguish," McAllen Fire Captain Michael Hernandez said. "And since we can't get into the building, we basically have to hit the hot spots from the exterior of the building. We're taking advantage of any opening we have to get in there. But the building is unsafe. We can't commit people inside the building right now for fear of building collapse."
The building is a total loss. Investigators will continue to look into the possible arson.
