HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A blood drive today at Harlingen Medical Center was held in an attempt to save lives and spread awareness about the need for blood donations in the Valley.
To meet the Valley's demand, 175 need to donate blood everyday.
United Blood Services says about a dozen people stopped by today to donate.
While most people donated for strangers, some donated for close loved ones with medical issues.
"My wife, she's having heart surgery today and she asked me before if I could donate blood just in case she would need it," said blood donor Gilbert Castaneda. "The Valley always needs blood so if I can help em out, people here in the Valley you know, that's what I want to do."
United Blood Services advises donors to wait three months before donating again.
