Cameron County Commissioners will meet this week to decide the future of the South Padre Island Parks Department.
County Judge Carlos Cascos says he hopes to close the department and transfer equipment and employees to either the Sheriff's Department or the Constable's office. He says this shift will "Save the county money and expand the coverage area of the officers."
If it happens it could remove the position of Chief within the department, but the current Parks Chief Juan Mendoza does not agree with the proposed move. Cascos argues the modification could put more deputies on patrol in areas like Laguna Heights where constables are reporting problems with drug activity in the area.
He says it will also help increase patrols of the unincorporated parts of South Padre Island.
