Leslie Lucio was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. For two years, she went through several chemotherapy treatments and a transplant, but she relapsed.
She needed a bone marrow transplant. Otherwise she'd only have 12 months to live. Lucio and doctors waited for months for that bone marrow match, but because of her rare antigens and Hispanic ethnicity, doctors were unable to find that match.
But doctors found an alternative. A cord blood transplant was the key to beating her cancer. The operation was a success. Lucio has been cancer-free for a year now and has many future plans.
