EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — There's a new pedestrian walkway connecting UT-Pan American to the County Courthouse in Edinburg.
City leaders welcomed the new walkway on Friday. It covers up a half-mile portion of McIntyre Street. There is a bike lane, gazebo and benches along the six-block area.
The walkway was paid for with a $1.8 million grant and about $1.5 million locally.
"I expect, before we're done, we'll have events here every weekend," Edinburg Mayor Richard Garcia said. "And right now, it's a couple of times a month. We're working on getting it to where this is an area not just for Edinburgers, but everyone in the Valley to come and enjoy with their families."
Garcia said he got his vision for the walkway when touring the famous Las Ramblas in Barcelona.
