BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Hiring outside help to fix up your house has it's consequences, Na'Tassia Finley reports one Brownsville family found out the hard way, that their housekeeper was up to no good.
Hiring outside help to do things around your home, especially when you're not there, can potentially come with risks, Brownsville PD Officer J.J. Trevino, "More than anything, if you can get any type of reference to these people that would probably be beneficial to whoever is going to do the hiring. I know it's sometimes hard cause some of these people may not have any references, but you obviously found them from someone or somehow, so you can start there."
A couple found themselves victims after learning, through their bank, that charges were being made on one of their credit cards, a card they never used. Maria De Jesus Valeriano Ramirez, 23, was working as a housekeeper for the victims, who live in the 4900 block of Padre Island Highway so they decided to ask her what she knew about the missing card.
The victims notified police who advised them to do a through inventory of her home to make sure nothing else was missing, but there was, thousands and thousands of dollars in jewelry.
Detectives then paid a visit to Ramirez's home and she admitted to stealing the card and the jewelry valued at $150,000, Brownsville PD Officer J.J. Trevino, "She scattered the jewelry around to different pawn shops through out the city so they're trying to recover as much as they can."
Right now the case remains open as investigators are working to find those pieces.
