SOUTH PADRE ISALND, TX — The local oil spill response team with the GLO’s (General Land Office) Brownsville Regional Office has determined zero impact on South Padre Island from the Texas City oil spill that occurred Mar. 22.
The team conducted rapid assessments every day last week from Boca Chica to the Mansfield Jetties.
Early last week, small tar balls were found along Mustang Island near Corpus Christi. Less than 1% oil in sargassum impacted the North Padre Island National Seashore where the beach was closed to vehicular access, but remained open to pedestrians.
The cleanup continued through the weekend.
In South Padre Island, the oil response team will continue to monitor the coast, although no impact is anticipated.
