BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The first robotic-assisted knee surgery is now available in Cameron County.
The "Navio Partial Knee Replacement" allows doctors to be more precise in making inicisions in the patient.
The surgery is different from a total knee replacement in that it's a much less invasive surgery with a quick recvoery time of just a few days.
The surgery itself takes between 45 minutes to one hour.
The patients who have undergone the surgery said they have less pain and are able to engage in physical activity soon afterward.
"The Navio or partial knee replacement has a smaller code, a faster recovery," said Valley Baptist Medical Center orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jose Bossolo. "By allowing us to remove less bone, we don't need to violate or damage existing structures like ligaments and tendons."
The first Navio partial knee replacement in the US was performed last year, and Valley Baptist is the second institution in South Texas to participate.
