MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — We now know the date and course of the second McAllen marathon.
The city on Tuesday announced the date of December 14th for the race. Last year the date wasn't known until late summer. It didn't give runners enough time to make plans to run.
Organizers are hoping for more than 2,000 runners this year. Last year there were a little more than 1,000. The race will be promoted in Mexico City and Monterrey. It is also a Boston Marathon qualifier.
"Since we are a relatively flat course except for the Second Street overpass, it makes them have faster times which would also qualify them for Boston, so with a flat course, it is easier," McAllen Parks and Recreation director Sally Gavlik said.
The course will be the same as last year's marathon, which took advantage of both the Second Street and Bicentennial Trails.
