MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A group in the Valley wants businesses to hire more deaf and hard of hearing workers.
Stepping Out is a group that advocates for deaf and hard of hearing people. It wants businesses to know about all the resources available to help in hiring. The Texas Department of Rehabilitative Services offers free hiring services. It pays for interpreters for the deaf and offers training programs.
"A lot of these services that allows for communication access is free of charge and we just felt that a lot of the business locally in the Rio Grande Valley weren't aware of these services," Stepping Out event coordinator Vanessa Vera said. "That's what we're bring to light today."
Congressman Ruben Hinojosa was the keynote speaker at today's event at South Texas College.
