BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Today some Cameron County officials are conducting a recount for democratic candidate Minerva Pena.
On election night, the votes were tallied using an electronic scanner. Justice of the Peace candidate Minerva Pena asked for her votes to be counted manually.
About 15 people in the Dancy Building have been working hands-on with the ballots to verify the number of votes each candidate got. All four JP candidates were in the room with their assigned poll watchers as counting teams and early voting sorters tallied up the votes.
Election officials say they expect the numbers to be as close as possible to election day.
"There may be markings from time to time on a ballot that may be read one way by a machine, and they can be interpreted, legally, by the counting team another way, so you may have some small movement of numbers in this race, we expect to see what that is at the end of the recount," said Cameron County elections official Christopher Davis.
Another candidate from the 357th district court requested a recount as well. That will be a countywide recount scheduled for Sunday.
