MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Some Valley educators have a little spending cash to use.
HEB surprised four Rio Grande Valley educators on Wednesday with a $1,000 personal check.
"And then the next thing I knew, the cameras were on me," Ben Milam Elementary special education teacher Katherine Moore said. "Some of my favorite students were there and to have them be a part of it is something I won't forget."
Another winner is Cynthia Rodriguez, the principal at Blanca Sanchez Elementary. It's all part of the supermarket chain's Excellence in Education award. Winning teachers also get $1,000 for their school. Principals get $2,500 for their school.
All the winners go to Houston in May for a chance to win $25,000.
"If you love what you do, it becomes a part of your life," Rodriguez said. "The best part is seeing our students succeed."
It's Rodriguez's job to know all that's going on at her school. She was asked to do some busy work this morning before the event. Her staff and students used that time to set up the surprise.
"And meanwhile they were back here doing all this," Rodriguez said of the surprise. "I'm surprised this one escaped. Because I normally know everything that happens on my campus."
Rodriguez said she will use the money to go on a cruise. Moore said she'll spend it at HEB.
