WESLACO, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The driver who allegedly killed a 16-year-old girl after failing to stop for a school bus is now behind bars.
Carmen Gonzalez-Velez, 36, was arrested by DPS state troopers and charged with criminal negligent homicide.
Last week, Gonzalez-Velez failed to stop for a La Joya ISD school bus with its flashing lights on and hit 16-year-old Brenda Cuellar with her car. Cuellar was crossing La Homa Road in Palmview when she was struck by Gonzalez-Velez's Chevy Cobalt. Cuellar was taken to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Gonzalez-Velez was taken to the Hidalgo County Jail where she faced a judge earlier today. Her bond was set at $100,000.
Under Texas law, drivers on both sides of the road must stop for a school bus with students getting on or off, even if there is a left turn lane in the middle of the road.
DPS officials say Gonzalez-Velez was driving in the opposite direction of the bus when she reportedly hit Cuellar with her vehicle.
