HARLINGEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A Harlingen man, originally charged with assault, is now charged with murder after the victim died from their injuries.
On Saturday, February 22nd at around 9:30 p.m. police officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Sam Houston Street in reference to a disturbance.
Officers found a man, identified as Leroy Mena, who reported to officers that Esequiel Martinez, 39, had assaulted him with some brass knuckles. The victim was transported to a local hospital for his injuries and died on March 1st at a Corpus Christi hospital.
Martinez originally was charged on February 24th with aggravated assault and handed a bond amount of $100,000. Since the medical examiner listed Mena's cause of death as blunt force trauma the assault charge was upgraded to murder and a new bond set at $750,000.
