EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — After an hour-long documentary on the infamous Irene Garza murder case, Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra explains his decision-making on the matter.
The documentary that aired on Saturday laid out the evidence in a 50 year old murder investigation. Rene Guerra did the same on Monday.
He displayed all the evidence held by his office on the case in which a young beauty queen was raped and murdered in McAllen.
Some people say Guerra did a disservice when a suspect, then-priest John Feit, wasn't called to the grand jury in 2004. The grand jury eventually declined to bring any charges.
Guerra says it's not that easy.
"If the individual is out of state, I believe that we should review the cases here before we go out and get somebody from out of state," Guerra said. "And then find out that there's not enough evidence to convict an individual, or then somebody changes testimony and then we'll have to dismiss the charges."
In the documentary, Guerra's opponent Ricardo Rodriguez was featured as well. They both face off in Tuesday's election for the District Attorney's seat.
