BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's college signing season and one of Brownsville's own will head off to college on a free ride.
Veteran's Memorial High School's own Serena Patterson signed a commitment to Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.
She's going on a full volleyball scholarship at the school and her family estimates that's more than $20,000 towards her education.
Serena stated, "You get a little nervous at first, it feels like you're signing your life away, but then you get a sense of security. It's a weight off your shoulders, okay now you know, it's the next chapter in your life."
The scholarship has to be renewed every year, but Wiley College Coach Nancy Sikobee says she sees no reason why the scholarship won't be good for Patterson's expected four years of college.
