BROWNSVILLE, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's a big weekend in Brownsville, two fiestas begin on Thursday, meaning more people out celebrating, Na'Tassia Finley tells us how the Brownsville Police Department is increasing security to keep people safe.
It's one of the busiest weekends of the year for the City of Brownsville, Charro Days is already underway, but starting tomorrow things will really pick up event wise and so will police officer presence.
J.J. Trevino, Brownsville PD Public Information Officer, "We'll have the extra patrols, we'll have plain clothed officers as well as uniformed officers, obviously at the Charro parades, Sombrero Fest and the carnival.
Somebreo Fest opening its gates Thursday and the Charro Days parades running over the next three days, not only will local residents be making their way to downtown, but so will visitors.
J.J. Trevino, "Everybody knows about Charro Days, not only Brownsville people, but up in the Valley. There's a lot of people that come down to enjoy the festivities and the food and the music, so there's quite a bit of people here, this is why the security gets upgraded.
The Brownsville PD suggests those who plan on drinking get a plan in place before having that first alcoholic beverage, J.J. Trevino, "Drinking and driving don't mix. If you choose to do so, make sure you plan ahead and be responsible about it."
Designate a driver or have a taxi cab's number on hand, also police advise event goers to not leave anything of value in their vehicles, by doing so, they risk of becoming a victim of a car burglary.
Trevino says typically more arrests are made over the weekend, simply because more people are out in the community, "We're not out to ruin anybody's good time, we are out there to keep everybody safe. Obviously, if you are doing something you're not supposed to, well then there are going to be consequences."
