PHARR, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — People who are late on traffic tickets in Pharr can skate on the late fees this month.
It's all part of an amnesty program by the city to encourage traffic violators to come clean on their accounts. A typical late fee costs around $194 and would be waived for people who came in January or in February. The city typically holds an amnesty period two to three times a year.
"It might encourage people, except that they never know when it's going to be," said Municipal Judge Rudy Martinez. "Sometimes we have it in November, sometimes we might have it in January, or we might not have it at all. So when they hear about an amnesty month, I think it's incumbent upon them to come and get it taken care of."
Judge Martinez says the program has been in place since he took his position ten years ago. In that time, Pharr has accumulated $8-$10 million in outstanding tickets.
