TxDot officials say they have around 20 trucks ready to make sure Valley roadways are safe to drive on.
Officials say crews will be out monitoring bridges for icy conditions, if they determine the roads are getting bad to drive on, they have ice rock ready to put down on the roads. Ice rock makes traction better for drivers and can prevent skidding on the road. TxDot officials do have some tips for drivers if they do have to drive in the freezing weather.
• If you don't need to be out don't.
• Use extreme caution on the road and pay attention.
• Listen for weather conditions.
• Don't apply your breaks to hard. Doing that will make your car slide.
Crews will also be monitoring the causeway to South Padre Island for ice conditions. If ice does form and driving conditions become dangerous, DPS and local officials will decide on closing the causeway.
