An Ohio man convicted of murder in 1994 was executed on Thursday morning.
Dennis McGuire was put to death using a two drug cocktail that's never been used in U.S. executions before.
Like many states, Ohio has been forced to find new drug protocols after European based manufacturers banned U.S. prisons from using their drugs in executions.
Lawyers for McGuire had argued the new drug combo would cause him to suffocate to death in agony, the state disagreed.
Reporters who witnessed the execution said McGuire appeared to gasp several times. They said it took as long as 15 minutes for him to die.
McGuire was executed at 10:53 local time at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
