PHARR, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Dozens of race walkers gathered for Texas' Largest Judged Race Walk in Pharr on Saturday.
Race walking is an Olympic event and a pair of Olympians were on hand for the race at Liberty School. Pharr native Alejandro Chavez won the 10K race.
There were four different races at the event. Race walking has just two rules. You can't have both feet leave the ground at once. And your supporting leg must stay straight until it goes behind you.
"All it is is going from point A to point B covering a distance with a certain technique, like the butterfly in swimming or the 110M hurdles," Chavez said. "It's the same thing as those other events. All you have to do is follow two rules from point A to point B."
The Olympics host race walks of 20 and 50 kilometers.
