HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Jose Padilla is a commander in the Hidalgo County Sheriff's office and he will be spending Christmas behind bars.
Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations were part of Padilla's arrest early this morning.
Padilla is facing two federal charges: money laundering and conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to distribute. For the charges, he faces up to life in prison and up to a $10.5 million fine.
His arrest is in connection to a drug case against Tomas "El Gallo" Gonzalez.
Several former Hidalgo County deputies are awaiting sentencing in the Panama Unit drug scandal. The sentencing date was recently postponed until next year.
