McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — McAllen is hosting its inaugural marathon this weekend along with the first Tamale Fest. The marathon will be run Sunday and the tamale festival will be on Saturday.
Friday is the last day to register online, but it can also be done at the Boys and Girls Club in Mcallen on Saturday.
The marathon will begin and end at the De Leon Soccer Complex at Buddy Owens and 34th Street.
About 1,100 runners are expected for the race, so organizers ask drivers to be cautious on Sunday.
"When they're out and about, we encourage them to drive slowly," McAllen Parks and Recreation Director Sally Gavlik said. "We also encourage people to come out and watch the runners. We have runners from four different countries, and ten different states that will be here participating... It allows us to develop a course that is something that can be advertised and promoted throughout the country."
Several streets will be closed on Sunday for the marathon.
