A suspected drug smuggler is dead tonight after he attempted to escape authorities but crashed his car into some concrete blocks then ended on the banks of the Rio Grande.
Border Patrol agents spotted a black Ford Explorer driving away from the river. Agents became suspicious and drove towards the SUV to question the driver but when the man saw agents approaching him, officials say he turned around, headed back to the river, tried to ditch the vehicle but failed.
“The agents got thereafter, the vehicle tried to get into the river and the subject was found away from the vehicle.”
Spokesperson for the Border Patrol, Joe Treviño, tells News Center 23, it appears the man tried to jump into the river but crashed into concrete blocks in the attempt. A justice of the peace pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Upon searching the vehicle, Hidalgo County officials along with Border Patrol agents found 10 large bundles of marijuana, weighing 780 pounds.
