EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — An attempted robbery in broad daylight leaves one young man behind bars with a first degree felony charge.
It happened at the intersection of 16th and Schunior in Edinburg--that's where the victim says 21-year-old Anthony Villarreal approached his car with a gun demanding money. The victim fled the scene and called police.
Shortly after, Villarreal was arrested a few blocks away. The gun in question turned out to be a pellet gun, but Villarreal is charged with aggravated robbery with a bond set at $100,000.
"The victim in this case feared for his life, he feared for his safety," said Lt. Oscar Treviño, spokeperson for Edinburg Police. "He was under the impression that this was an actual firearm, so therefore he is being charged with aggravated robbery."
There was one other suspect with villarreal at the time of the attempted robbery, but after further investigation police determined no charges would be necessary for that suspect.
