Four members of Roma's school board tonight unanimously resend a December 7th decision to reassign coach Max Habecker, Jr.
In English -- one week after losing his job, coach Habecker is once more the head coach of the Gladiators.
The Community support for their coach tonight filled the auditorium and a 30 minute open forum.
On the 7th, the board voted 5-1 to reassign Habcker -- tonight it was 4-0 to resend that decision. Three board members were not present to vote this evening, including president Elisa Lujano.
NewsCenter 23 has learned that Lujano's son attends Rio Grande City high school, wearing #45 on the varsity football team and registering at least one tackle in one game played in 2009. The Lujano home address in is Roma. UIL Assistant Athletic Director Peter Contreras says the athlete in question IS ELIGIBLE to play for the Rattlers if the UIL granted the school a waiver. RGC Athletics could not be reached for comment on the issue.
Fans and parents of Roma football players tell NewsCenter 23 that Lujano's son tried-out, but did not make varsity for the Roma program as a freshman. They add Habecker's original reassignment may be a form of retaliation.
