PHARR SAN JUAN ALAMO, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The PSJA school district has an agreement with South Texas College that lets parents of students get certifications or credentials in certain career fields.
More than 1,200 parents signed up for ESL classes. They can also choose to take welding, computer and nutrition classes.
"All the studies show that all the parents that are involved in their children's education, their children do better," said PSJA Superintendent Daniel King. "Studies show that parents that are more educated, parents who improve themselves, all of that rubs off on the students and influences the children... There's thousands of parents in this community that want to move forward, and they don't really find doors to do that."
The classes take place at one of three locations in the PSJA area. They are paid mostly through grant funds.
