DONNA, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Donna and Edinburg Economedes high schools are your reigning City Clash of the Week teams.
Donna beat the Jaguars 24-6, improving their potential playoff seeding. The Donna football team was led by sophomore Amante Bowen, who ran for a season-high 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Bowen had the support of his teammates, and both teams had the support of their school and Payne Auto Group.
"We've had to split our budget into different campuses, so this is really kind of a Christmas on November 1 if you will for our athletic program," said Fernando Castillo, the assistant superintendent for Donna ISD.
Donna ISD split off Donna High and Donna North High for the first time this year. Edinburg ISD is in its second year with Vela High.
Both Donna and Economedes want the $1,000 general scholarship to go back to the players who helped earn it.
"With the budget cuts the last few years, schools have been very behind, including Economedes," said Economedes principal Anthony Garza. "The $1,000, I'd like to see it put back into the football team especially in the form of a scholarship for some of the players."
Donna will likely use the funds for equipment. Football is one of the most expensive sports programs to run because just helmets can run hundreds of dollars.
