MERCEDES, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — "It's a friendly rivalry, if you may, with Mercedes and Edcouch Elsa," said Mercedes ISD Superintendent Daniel Trevino Jr. "We're looking forward to a good game."
But before that game kicked off, both schools were awarded $1,000 scholarship checks as this week's recipients of the City Clash Game of the Week scholarship from the Payne Auto Group.
"The scholarship means so much for our kids because we have so many kids that come from low income families, and this scholarship is going to help several of our students," said Edcouch Elsa ISD Superintendent Richard Rivera.
Mercedes ISD is also looking forward to helping one of their students achieve a college education with the scholarship money.
"It's a great honor to receive the scholarship from Payne Motors," said Dr. Trevino. "All of these funds will go toward our scholarship fund, and this particular scholarship can go to anybody, any graduating senior."
In addition to receiving the scholarship check, Mercedes also celebrated the return of their injured quarterback, Isaiah Garza, who was paralyzed in a car accident back in August.
"Isaiah for the last three years has been our true leader, and obviously with his accident occurring a few months ago, it's been devastating to the team," explained Mike Uribe, Mercedes Head Coach. "So him being here, I cannot explain how much it means to our program."
As far as rival games go, this one was a close fight between both teams. Mercedes got on board first with a field goal, but ended up falling short of the win as Edcouch Elsa emerged with the 20 to 17 victory.
Congratulations to both teams in this week's City Clash Game of the Week.
