Hutto, TX — A Texas man got quite a surprise when a reporter came knocking at his door.
Reporter, "We have the list here of the highest violators as far as not paying the tolls, and you're number two on the list."
Stephen Dyment, "Really?"
Reporter, "Yes. It says you owe $217,000 in unpaid tolls."
Stephen Dyment, "Are you kidding me?"
The Texas Department of Transportation says Stephen Dyment and his wife, Mandy, have failed to pay toll fees more than 10,500 times and they aren't the only ones accused of failing to pay tolls.
TxDOT published a list of top offenders in hopes of collecting more than $27 million dollars in unpaid tolls.
They say the top offender on the list owes more than $236,000 dollars and has more than 14,300 unpaid toll transactions.
The department says collected tolls will be used to pay debts and to fund state maintained toll roads.
Authorities say they have the authority to ban vehicles from using toll roads.
They say they can also report violators to county tax assessors, to block violators vehicle registration renewal.
