HARLINGEN, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — In recognition of National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), Valley AIDS Council (VAC) makes history as the first HIV testing program in South Texas to use a revolutionary HIV test that provides results to people in just one minute. In recognition of NLAAD, VAC will continue to offer free and confidential HIV testing at its three offices in Brownsville, Harlingen and McAllen but will add the 1-minute INSTI HIV test to its menu of options.
The HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately impact Latino communities. Consider this:
- Latinos represent approximately 17% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 20% of new HIV infections in 2009, the most recent year these data were available.
- Latinos accounted for 19% of people living with HIV infection in 2009.
- Since the epidemic began, almost 18,000 Latinos with AIDS have died in the United States and its dependent areas. In 2009, nearly 3,300 Latinos with AIDS died.
- Latinos are more likely to test late for HIV infection compared to other racial/ethnic groups in the United States and more likely to receive an AIDS diagnosis within a year of testing positive for HIV due to late testing.
