MISSION, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A woman is in jail after police say she faked a robbery and lied to police about it.
23-year-old Alyssa De La Garza is facing charges of theft and fabricating evidence. Police say she pretended to have her head smashed on the counter by a robber at the store where she was working.
The bandit made off with nearly $1,400. De La Garza told investigators the suspect was wearing a mask, when security cameras showed he clearly wasn't.
"When she gave her statement and they looked at the video, it didn't match to what she was telling us, which suspicion arose right away to the detectives," said Manny Casas of the Mission Police Department. "It was all a setup, later on we found out it was all a setup. She was part of it... They do what they call drops every few hours of money into a safe, she didn't it, which means that she had a good amount of money."
De La Garza first falsely blamed her cousin for the plan. Later on she blamed other family members. Police say they know who was in on it with her and expect him to be caught soon.
