BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A former Rio Hondo reserve police officer was charged today with burglary of a building, tampering with government records and abuse of official capacity.
Ernesto Yañez, 26, was arrested in Houston Oct. 4 and extradited Thursday to Brownsville. Yañez had resigned from the Rio Hondo Police Department Oct. 1. According to police, Yañez stole tools from a residential construction site near Rio Hondo in September while he was a police officer.
Magistrate Judge Adolfo E. Cordova arraigned Yañez for the following charges:
1. Burglary of a Building: $15,000 bond
2. Tampering with Government Records: $30,000 bond
3. Abuse of Official Capacity: $5,000 bond
Lopez remains jailed at Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center. Total bond set at $50,000.
