WESLACO, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Don't drink the water in Weslaco. Officials say that after a water main break on Tuesday. It was quickly patched up, but the city will remain under a boil-water order for two days until the old water is flushed out of the city system.
The accident happened around noon on Tuesday at the site of the new water treatment plant. City officials say this is what happens with old pipes and is the reason why improvements are needed.
The city called all the numbers in the city directory to get the word out. About 20,000 people are affected.
"As part of our improvements to the water treatment plant, they were doing some excavating, and they hit a pipeline, burst the pipeline, which interrupted service to the entire city of Weslaco for about an hour, hour and a half," said George Garrett, emergency management director for Weslaco. "Some of the water flowed back to the city, especially to our critical people at the school district and the hospital."
Again, if you're in Weslaco, please don't drink water for about two days. If water is needed, please boil it first.
