STARR COUNTY, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The West Nile virus has been reported in a resident of Starr County, but the virus was not acquired in South Texas.
Dr. Brian Smith, Regional Director for the Texas Department of State Health Services, confirmed that the man who tested positive for West Nile did not contract the mosquito-borne illness here in the Valley.
The man has a residence in Starr County, but currently lives out of state.
Dr. Smith adds that West Nile rates in the Valley are relatively low, but people are still advised to take precautions against mosquitoes.
