Sheriff warns parents about marijuana laced candy.
A lawman is left speechless after discovering candy laced with marijuana during a drug bust.
Now, he's warning parents of the potential danger.
"I've never seen anything like this. I just hope this is the end of it in Berry County, McDonald County," says Mike Epperly, Berry County Sheriff.
This is the first time Berry County Sheriff Mick Epperly has seen marijuana in candy form in the area.
"We definitely don't need to get this in the children's hands," said Sheriff Epperly.
The Jasper County Drug Task force recently confiscated a package with bags of candy like lemon drops, gummy bears, and mints that contained medical marijuana.
They also recovered marijuana in other forms.
The package was intercepted in Joplin, and then handed over to the Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force.
Epperly says, "It was being shipped from Colorado, we believe to Pineville."
The products look like normal lemon drops and normal gummy bears, but if you take a closer look at the ingredients list, you can see it's labeled with the amount of THC in each package.
The Sheriff wants parents to be aware these products are out there.
"Be really cautious of what their children are getting into in terms of candy. This could be a situation such as Halloween coming up, something that they really need to pay close attention to."
Medical professionals say if a child does ingest these, it's best to contact poison control or take them to the emergency room.
"Immediately, they could have some nausea and problems with their stomach. It can also put a child at risk for abnormal heart beats or troubles with abnormal heart rhythms. So, it could be dangerous for a younger child," says Sarah Moran, a medical professional.
Sheriff Epperly wants to make sure that doesn't happen.
"I can assure that the sheriff in McDonald County, myself, are going to work hard to make sure it stays out of the children's hands,"
Not only does the Sheriff intend to have a session with teachers and parents to inform them that items like this exist, he also wants to make sure his officers will be alert if they come across these substances in the field.
