McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A program at South Texas College is helping young adults graduate and get into college.
The Gateway to College program takes former dropouts and helps them earn the credits they need for a diploma. The program has a rigorous application process that will help weed out students who aren't serious.
The program director says about 400 students have gone through and about 70 percent have been successful as Gateway graduate Eli Ibarra stated, "I never thought I was going to college. Seriously, I thought that if I graduated from high school, it was going to be something big. They showed me how to do my stuff, they taught me how to prepare for life, how to prepare from my classes and everything."
Gateway has been around for two years and the staff is paid for from a grant through STC.
