CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A tragic update to a story we first told you about last week, the Corpus Christi middle school student bitten by ants during a football game has died.
A moment of silence was held at Haas Middle School Monday morning for Cameron Espinosa, who passed away on Sunday evening, at Driscoll Children's Hospital.
Medics took the 13-year-old to the hopsital last Thursday night after he was bitten on the legs and stomach in the middle of a halftime huddle on the school's athletic fields. Authorities say the teen experienced a severe allergic reaction and lost consciousness twice before emergency crews arrived.
Counselors were on hand at the school to assist students and staff. All athletic and extracurricular activities at the school are canceled for the entire week.
The field will not be used again until the school district treats it.
