AUSTIN, TX — Following reports indicating that for the first time in a decade the rate of illegal immigration flow to South Texas is greater than Arizona, today Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples sent a letter to President Obama requesting more resources to secure the border.
“For nearly three years now, I and many others have repeatedly asked for additional help from our federal government to address an immediate and life-threatening need here in Texas,” Commissioner Staples wrote. “We need significantly more resources to aid our landowners in defense of ruthless drug cartels and illegal human traffickers who are literally riding roughshod over our citizens. No landowner in the United States of America should be required to live in fear for the lives of their families.”
Commissioner Staples also invited President Obama to join him at one of the many landowner listening sessions he hosts in South Texas. By joining Commissioner Staples at one of these sessions, the President can hear firsthand testimony about how illegal human and drug smuggling activities are threatening Texans’ lives and livelihoods.
“While Syria is a very serious matter, we have atrocities occurring on U.S. soil that require increased resources immediately,” Commissioner Staples said. “Unlike Syria, protecting our border does not require congressional approval; it simply requires leadership and action.”
Commissioner Staples has repeatedly asked President Obama and his administration to provide much-needed resources to secure the Texas/Mexico border. In 2011, Commissioner Staples launched ProtectYourTexasBorder.com . The website shares the struggles of those who work to feed our nation, all while living under the threat of criminals who are illegally entering the United States. The site profiles the harrowing true stories of farmers, ranchers and other citizens who deal daily with intimidation, trespassing, drug runners and costly property damage.
Without adequate resources from the federal government, Commissioner Staples has attempted to fill the gap by providing grants to the Texas Department of Public Safety for its Operation Drawbridge program, which installs and monitors low-cost, high-tech motion-detecting cameras to improve surveillance capabilities along the Texas/Mexico border. The Commissioner also is the author of Broken Borders, Broken Promises: How Porous Borders Are Robbing America’s Future. The book highlights past and present attempts to secure our borders.
