MCALLEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A local cupcake shop is firing back at allegations of unfair labor practices.
Labor protestors picketed outside the RGV Cupcake Factory in McAllen on Monday, Labor Day.
A settlement with a former employee is said to have sparked the picket. The employee, Laura Sofia Sanchez-Martinez, said she was fired under illegal circumstances.
In a statement, the RGV Cupcake Factory responded: “Ms. Martinez worked for RGV Cupcake Factory for less than one month and not as a full-time employee. Ms. Martinez was not terminated for asking about a salary increase or tips. She was terminated for reasons unrelated to wages or protected activities, which we are not at liberty to discuss.
RGV Cupcake Factory disputed and continues to dispute Ms. Martinez’s allegations. RGV Cupcake Factory settled the unfair labor practice charge without admission of liability. RGV Cupcake Factory claims to be in compliance with payment of wages laws.
