RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX-15) announced grants totaling $62,880 have been awarded to the Hidalgo County criminal justice system by the U.S. Department of Justice through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG). The grants will be appropriately distributed to Edinburg, McAllen, and Pharr.
• The City of Edinburg, Texas will receive $19,778
• The City of McAllen, Texas will receive $22,615
• The City of Pharr, Texas will receive $20,487
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions.
In Edinburg, the JAG funding will be used to improve the criminal justice system by purchasing mobile video equipment and supplies for police officers at the Edinburg Police Department.
In McAllen, the JAG funding will be used to purchase a digital imaging system and accessories to update the police departments' Explosive Ordinance Device Unit.
The City of Pharr will use the JAG funding to purchase a use of force simulator to provide police officers with a realistic environment in which to practice real life scenarios.
