SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — As summer comes t o an end, millions of Texans are traveling statewide for Labor Day Weekend before school and many seasonal jobs begin. And some of those travelers will come to South Padre Island for some fun in the sun.
"Labor Day historically is a good weekend, uh, for people to come out and enjoy the beach and do all the activities that we have on the island. Um, it's, kids are back in school, so it's not like a full-planned Fourth of July type holiday but it is a good holiday and it draws a lot of people," said South Padre Island Mayor Robert Pinkerton.
"I think the proximity makes the island a great destination, so we have a lot of the Valley people, we have a lot of the state, so it's really a great location to take a short drive and enjoy really a nice getaway on the island," South Padre Island Public Information Officer Naida Robles.
While no official Island activities have been planned for Labor Day, a concert at Clayton's Bar and Grill is expected to be a highlight.
And if you're like the majority of Texans traveling by car this weekend, traffic on the island isn't expected to be a concern.
"Traffic on the island will be slightly increased because many people will be here for labor Day Weekend. However, it's still expected to run smoothly."
"You know, traffic is gonna come to a stop every now and then, but generally speaking, the traffic moves fairly good...just a lot of it, or can be a lot of it. So I would expect, weather being good, that there's going to be a lot of people," said Pinkerton.
