LA JOYA, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A student accused of bringing a gun to campus was arrested on the first day of school.
Police say a 13-year-old boy brought a .22 caliber handgun to Dr. Javier Saenz Middle School on Monday.
La Joya ISD Police Chief Raul Gonzalez said a parent discovered their son had a firearm in his possession. Investigators determined that another 7th grade student brought the weapon to campus with the intention of selling the handgun.
"We are still investigating the incident, our biggest concern as always was whether or not there was a target," said Gonzalez. "And at this point our investigation is leading us to the point that the gun was probably going to be sold and there was a whole purpose behind the student taking the gun to school."
The boy is currently at a juvenile detention center in Edinburg while police continue to investigate this incident.
Gonzalez wants to remind everyone that students who bring weapons or drugs to campus will face serious consequences.
