Collin County, TX — A split second accident leaves a hole in the hearts of a Texas family and community that will take years to heal. Now investigators are trying to figure out how a 4 year old got behind the wheel of a truck and struck his toddler sister.
For the Verde family, tragedy came in the way of a white pick-up truck and a 4 year-old son eager to help some of his family move on a Sunday afternoon.
Todd Ogden, Family Pastor, "The little boy got excited, grabbed the keys, went out and the truck was a standard, and it went ahead and started."
What the boy didn't realize is that his 16 month-old little sister, a girl everyone along Westmoreland Circle called Danny, was in the truck's path.
Juan Verde, the girl's uncle, "The dad and the brother, they still can't understand how that can happen so quickly."
Collin County deputies say the toddler died instantly. Hours later, the pain of what happened is perhaps just now setting in for her parents and brother.
Todd Ogden, "The real truth won't hit them until tonight when they don't put her to bed. That will be when the real truth hits."
It was just after 1:00 p.m. when neighbor Jim West heard it. "I was in the living room watching TV.", then he saw it, "See the baby wrapped up in a blanket. The thought of that just breaks your heart. They are real good neighbors. I just love 'em to death."
Family members say the parents tried to stop the truck as it rolled out of the driveway but it all happened in just seconds, just too fast.
They are devastated and so too is this community, everyone collectively trying to make sense of a loss that's almost too much to handle.
Todd Ogden, "Human help is not enough. We've got to have some extra help from God above."
